le dessin de presse dans tous ses États Cartooning for Peace
integrated in the 5th edition of encontros do DeVIR festival, under the theme to de(a)nnounce, this exhibition results of the commemorative book of Cartooning for Peace* 10th birthday.
It has been in exhibition at Paris City Hall, and is now presented in Portugal for the first time. This serie of drawings on freedom of expression offers an insight into the work of cartoonists, pacifist defenders of our societies, who are regularly the target of attacks all over the world.
By the beneficial means of laughter, these brave guarantors of press freedom help to preserve the health of our democracies when they are threatened. Accustomed to advance on the narrow crest between freedom and responsibility, the cartoonist «is a tightrope walker trying to stay upright», as the writer Régis Debray so aptly puts it. How to resist and fght for the freedom of the press when it is, still today, so often attacked? These tightrope walkers, true infantrymen of our democracies and our liberty, show us the way by the peaceful arms of pencil, creation, free speech and laughter. This exhibition pays tribute to them and recalls our common commitment to defend this fundamental principle of freedom of expression.
Cartooning for Peace is an international network of committed press cartoonists, founded in 2006 by Kofi Annan and Plantu, who fights with humour for the respect of all cultures and freedoms.
